I rode with another solo competitor, whose family provided outstanding support for us the entire ride. The plan was for “consistency” in all areas – consistent speed (17-17.5), consistent effort (NO wasted energy/efforts), and consistent calories (300/hr EVERY hour). We each wanted 300+ miles at the end. Not exactly what I would call a sexy plan, but we stuck to the plan, and it worked. We finished our 3rd century in just under 18 hours of riding time. The first time off the bike was actually 7:20am on Saturday, more than 13 hours after the start. My friend won this last year, but we knew we were going for 2nd and 3rd this year due to the prep and fitness of one other competitor who got about 30 more miles than we did. He got one lap up on me in the middle of the night when I briefly stopped, and that’s how we finished, one lap apart.
I also had outstanding support from the rest of the Marx-Bensdorf & BPC team, who were in the process of winning the men’s team event, as they flew past me both directions every few minutes at 26-30 mph. Lots of words of encouragement for me from them, and I rooted them on as well. First place was locked up and 4th place was chasing me, so with an hour or so left to go we went back out and got a final eight laps to lock up 2nd and 3rd place.
Overall, great event, great competition and great results…
